ICANN: Update: Draft Final Report of IDNC WG on Fast Track Process for IDN ccTLDs Now Available

Draft Final Report - Recommendations for Fast Track - For Public Comment - Version 0.4 [PDF, 96K]

On 13 June 2008 the IDNC WG published its draft Final Report. The IDNC WG now publishes now an update of its first draft to include the results of the various face-to face meeting discussions of the first draft.

Public Comments welcomed by 23 June 2008

Summary: The IDNC Working Group (IDNC WG) is currently working to develop and report on feasible methods that would enable the timely and efficient ("fast track") introduction of a limited number of non-contentious IDN ccTLDs, while an overall long-term IDN ccTLD policy is being developed. The IDNC WG has created a Draft Final Report designed to highlight the latest topics and issues that need to be considered in developing (1) a mechanism for the selection of the IDN ccTLD string and (2) a mechanism to designate an IDN ccTLD manager.

Process: The draft document is being made publicly available at this time solely to alert the community to the latest IDNC WG thinking and to facilitate further discussions at the ICANN Paris meeting. This document has not been signed off by the IDNC Working Group whose members will continue to provide their own comments and input.

Background: The IDNC WG was charted by ICANN's Board to develop and report on feasible methods, if any, that would enable the introduction, in a timely manner and in a manner that ensures the continued security and stability of the Internet, of a limited number of non-contentious IDN ccTLDs, associated with the ISO 3166-1 two-letter codes (both the official code list of ISO 3166-1 and the list of reserved ISO 3166-1 code elements) (popularly known as "the fast track"), while the overall IDN ccTLD policy is being developed.

Deadline and How To Submit Comments: Comments on the draft document are welcome via email to [email protected]. In order to be considered by the IDNC WG in Paris any emailed comments must be submitted by 23 June 2008. An archive of all comments received will be publicly posted at http://forum.icann.org/lists/idn-cctld-fast-track/.

Korean alphabet In domain names by 2009

“Hangeul,” the Korean alphabet, could be used for Internet domain names as early as the first quarter of 2009, the head of a domain management agency said Tuesday.

ICANN, or the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, has been in the process of revising the current Roman alphabet-based system to allow use of other characters for domains such as “com,” “org” and “net” used at the end of addresses.

“We hope for the Korean government to participate in the discussions (for the new domain-labelling system) in Paris (later this month),” said Paul Twomey, president of ICANN, which manages the assignment of domain names and IP addresses throughout the world. The agency hopes to finish the process by the first quarter of next year.
